Aluminium alloys

Pure aluminium is a soft and easy-to-work material. For some purposes these properties are just right, but in most cases pure aluminium is not strong enough. To provide sufficient strength, we use a wide variety of aluminium alloys. The most important alloying elements are silicon (Si), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn). The Nordic Aluminium alloying programme includes the alloys AW-6060, -6063, -6005A, -6082, -6101 and
-7108 , which all comply with EN standards.

The most important alloys are the aluminium-magnesium-silicon-alloys AW-6060 and AW-6063. They all represent a combination of good mechanical properties, excellent corrosion resistance, easy workability and reasonable price. Additionally they are easy to anodise, which is important when architectural applications are concerned. These alloys can be used when manufacturing multi-purpose sections of high surface quality. For higher strength requirements AW-6005A or AW-6082 alloys can be used. AW-7108 was developed especially for use in welded bearing structures, as the final strength at the joints of this alloy is only slightly lower than that of the base material. The alloys in this group are used in transport equipment, railway carriages and trucks, and other applications where the strength/weight ratio is highly valued.
